Studies show that the most popular definitions of a happy home are a space where you feel secure (69 percent), a place for relaxation (64 percent) and a space where you can be free to be yourself (57 percent). When it comes to making a home feel like a home and feel comfortable, interior design is a big reason why.
The interior design industry generates $10 billion annually as homeowners buy furniture, do remodeling projects or redecorate to spruce things up in a home.
There are many things that can be done on the spectrum of interior design to liven up a home or a room whether you’re talking about a dorm room, a bedroom or a home. You can add color, add texture, add light or perhaps even change the flooring.
One way to do that is by adding rugs to a space. There are plenty of benefits to having rugs in your living space, whether you put area rugs down in the living room or put dorm rugs in your college dorm room.
- Comfort: Some people swear by the look and feel hardwood flooring, but when it comes to comfort, it’s hard to beat area rugs or carpeting. Area rugs and dorm rugs can feel more comfortable on your skin and can help absorb the impact of your body, whether you’re laying on a rug or walking over it. Ideally, a rug’s edges should be 12 to 14 inches from the room’s perimeter.
- Health: Recent studies have shown that installing carpeting in a room or in a house is beneficial because it helps trap allergens. In Sweden, when carpet usage decreased by 70 percent allergic reactions within the general population increased by 30 percent. As an alternative, if you don’t have carpeting and suffer from allergies, an area rug, dorm rugs or a shag rug can help keep the allergens out.
- Grounding: Another benefit of dorm rugs is that they help a space feel grounded. They help anchor any furniture you’ve got in a room and provide a resting place for you at the end of the day. In the case of dorm rugs, adding these to a dorm room can give the room some real character and helps create a space of comfort. The average dorm room isn’t very big and isn’t necessarily the most comfortable without making some additions. Adding dorm rugs can give the space a feeling of comfort, which is important since you’ll be living there for several months at a time.
- Heat: Not only are rugs and carpet softer than hard surfaces, they’re also warmer. Rugs can be great insulators, especially if they are padded. They can be used anywhere, but might come in handy for some of the colder areas of a house such as a basement or in a dorm room, where there might be limited heat available.
- Less noise: Another benefit of dorm room rugs and area rugs is that they decrease the amount of noise in the space where you put them. If you’re on one of the higher floors of a dorm, chances are you hear plenty of echo and endless footsteps from the people around you. Rugs absorb sound and are quieter to walk on as opposed to a hard surface.
Regardless of the space you’re in, adding a rug can add a lot to it. If you’re in a dorm room, dorm rugs can help make it more comforting and add heat. They also reduce noise in the room, can be beneficial to your health and help anchor the furniture and other pieces you’ve got. Rugs come in all shapes, colors and sizes and adding them to a room can liven it up and add a great deal of comfort.
